Cytology

STAT Cytology samples must be received at the laboratory before 2P.M. for same day results.

  1. Protect cytology slides from formalin fumes as exposure results in artifactual distortion of the cells and renders the slides nondiagnostic in most instances.
  2. Cerebrospinal fluid must be submitted in red-top tubes.  The anticoagulant in lavender-tops dilutes the sample and will adversely affect the cell count and protein values.
  3. Fluids for fluid analysis must be submitted in lavender-top tubes to prevent clotting.  Cerebrospinal fluid is the exception (see #2 above).

STAT Cytology Samples must be received at the laboratory before 2P.M. for same-day results.  We recommend that you do not use the courier system for STATS, as they often do not arrive at the lab until after the cutoff.  Consider having one of your staff deliver the samples directly to AzVDL.

1-2mL EDTA whole blood, cavity fluid.

*Flow cytometry sample instructions:

We need a minimum of 1 mL sample for any sample type. If it is whole blood or cavity fluid, EDTA tube is the best way to send it.

If it is tissue (LN or lesion):

Total volume should be 1 mL that contains 5 to 6 aspirates of sample mixed with 0.9 mL of 0.9% saline and 0.1 mL of serum from patient.

  • 0.9 mL of 0.9% saline (which can be from IV fluids NaCl) in a transport tube (White top tube or solid red top tube with no additives).
  • Retrieve the 5 to 6 aspirates of tissue.
  • Mix aspirates in with the tube of saline. The sample should appear grossly cloudy (if it is still transparent, you may need additional tissue aspirates).
  • Mix in 0.1 mL of serum. o How to add serum? I advise collecting blood in a serum separator and separating out the serum. Then take about 0.1 mL of that serum and add to sample.
