New World Screwworm Update:
New World Screwworm (NWS) is a serious pest that can cause serious damage to livestock pets, wildlife, and less commonly, birds and people. NWS is a flesh-eating maggot in its larval stage. It is unique because it consumes live flesh, unlike other maggots that eat dead tissue. USDA confirmed presence of New World Screwworm in Texas on June 3, 2026
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is leading an aggressive response to NWS and current risk to animals and people in the United States remains very low. USDA article to stop screwworm spread
If you see any suspicious wounds, maggots, or infestations in your animals or herd; contact your State animal health official or APHIS Area Veterinarian in Charge.
